Knowledge Based Terrain Analysis
SPIE Proceedings, 1985This paper discusses an ongoing development effort to utilize knowledge based techniques for analyzing terrain. The application focuses on analyzing terrain to determine the likely location of various military forces and to determine the movement (traversability) and likely classifications of those forces. The effort has involved (i) the development of

SHAPE MODELING AND ANALYSIS OF TERRAIN
International Journal of Shape Modeling, 1994Summary: The construction of high-fidelity digital terrain models (DTM) requires the development of adaptive techniques for modeling and analysis of terrain surfaces. The paper presents a conceptual framework for digital terrain modeling which includes all relevant tasks to achieve this goal.

Area Sampling for Terrain Analysis
The Professional Geographer, 1962Area sampling is most useful in reducing the time and effort required for studies of large areas. It permits the formulation of rapid approximations and, because time is saved, it enables more detailed observations to be made and a greater number of variables to be considered.

Terrain complexity and uncertainties in grid‐based digital terrain analysis
International Journal of Geographical Information Science, 2006The objective of this research is to study the relationship between terrain complexity and terrain analysis results from grid‐based digital elevation models (DEMs). The impact of terrain complexity represented by terrain steepness and orientation on derived parameters such as slope and aspect has been analysed.

Terrain analysis from curvature profiles
International Journal of Imaging Systems and Technology, 1990AbstractThis paper describes a new algorithm which uses Gaussian and mean curvature values of the terrain surface to extract feature points. These points are then used for recognition of particular subregions of the terrain and in estimating relative positions of these subregions in the terrain.

Knowledge-Based Tactical Terrain Analysis
SPIE Proceedings, 1985Abstract The performance of autonomous vehicle systems is currently limited by their inability to accurately analyze their surrounding environment. In order to function in a dynamic real world environment, an autonomous vehicle system must be capable of interpreting terrain based upon predetermined mission goals.

Terrain rendering algorithm performance analysis
2012 IEEE/AIAA 31st Digital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC), 2012Nowadays, the flight guidance equipment supplies practically all the information, required for aircraft navigation. Pseudo-realistic terrain visualization is undoubtedly an important part of this information. Although modern graphics processors are able to render realistic terrain at interactive frame rates, in some applications, it is beneficial to ...

Urban Terrain Analysis Training Aids
1981Abstract : Just as analysis of terrain is important to general combat, so analysis of urban terrain is important to combat in built-up areas. This study was conducted to develop a series of graphic training aids which would provide troops with a means of learning the nature of the urban environment. The aids include the identification of building types
