Procedural feature generation for volumetric terrains [PDF]

open access: yesACM SIGGRAPH 2017 Posters, 2017
© 2017 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). In this work we present separate procedural methods to generate features that are found in natural terrains which are difficult to reproduce with heightmap-based methods. We approximate overhangs, arches and caves using procedural functions and a reduced set of parameters.

A multi-terrain feature-based deep convolutional neural network for constructing super-resolution DEMs

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Earth Observations and Geoinformation, 2023
Scale conversion between DEMs is an important issue in geomorphometry. There are many mature studies on the generation of low-resolution(LR) DEMs from high-resolution(HR) DEMs.

Feature-based terrain classification for LittleDog [PDF]

open access: yes2012 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, 2012
Recent work in terrain classification has relied largely on 3D sensing methods and color based classification. We present an approach that works with a single, compact camera and maintains high classification rates that are robust to changes in illumination.

The effect of resolution on terrain feature extraction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Recent increase in the production of high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) from lidar data has led to interest in their use for terrain mapping. Although the impact of different resolutions has been studied relative to terrain characteristics like roughness, slope and curvature, its relationship to the extraction of terrain features remains ...

Modeling walkability by remote sensing as latent walking speed extracted from multiple digital trail maps

open access: yesJournal of Spatial Information Science, 2022
Coordinating and managing teams searching for missing persons in wilderness areas is challenging. Local terrain characteristics and environmental conditions strongly influence how searchers accomplish their search tasks.

Evaluation of Radiometric and Atmospheric Correction Algorithms for Aboveground Forest Biomass Estimation Using Landsat 5 TM Data

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2016
Solar radiation is affected by absorption and emission phenomena during its downward trajectory from the Sun to the Earth’s surface and during the upward trajectory detected by satellite sensors.

Regressed Terrain Traversability Cost for Autonomous Navigation Based on Image Textures

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
The exploration of remote, unknown, rough environments by autonomous robots strongly depends on the ability of the on-board system to build an accurate predictor of terrain traversability. Terrain traversability prediction can be made more cost efficient
