Selecting Near-Optimal Learners via Incremental Data Allocation
We study a novel machine learning (ML) problem setting of sequentially allocating small subsets of training data amongst a large set of classifiers. The goal is to select a classifier that will give near-optimal accuracy when trained on all data, while ...

Astrophysical Data Analytics based on Neural Gas Models, using the Classification of Globular Clusters as Playground [PDF]
In Astrophysics, the identification of candidate Globular Clusters through deep, wide-field, single band HST images, is a typical data analytics problem, where methods based on Machine Learning have revealed a high efficiency and reliability ...

ABSTRACT We present novel 3D subsidence data enabling vertical movements' quantification during the early formation of the Pyrenean retro‐wedge. From Cenomanian to Turonian times, subsidence is relatively low (~26 ± 10 m/Myr), corresponding to a brief 10 Myr thermal re‐equilibration of the European lithosphere following the hyperextended rift episode ...

Abstract An updated approach to seismically constrained modeling of gravity data reveals two broad, NW‐trending low‐density zones in the mantle lithosphere beneath the Canadian Cordillera. The low‐density zones coincide with a shallow lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary (LAB), a shallow Curie‐point depth, and the location of Quaternary volcanoes.

Analog VLSI-Based Modeling of the Primate Oculomotor System [PDF]
One way to understand a neurobiological system is by building a simulacrum that replicates its behavior in real time using similar constraints. Analog very large-scale integrated (VLSI) electronic circuit technology provides such an enabling technology ...

A Seismically Active Shear Zone in the Uppermost Mantle Beneath the Canadian Rockies
Abstract Continental mantle earthquakes are uncommon but hold important clues for understanding lithospheric rheology. Few of these earthquakes (<10) have been documented in western North America, though it is likely more exist owing to difficulties in resolving focal depth for small earthquakes.
