Design and scaling of microscale Tesla turbines
Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering, 2013We report on the scaling properties and loss mechanisms of Tesla turbines and provide design recommendations for scaling such turbines to the millimeter scale. Specifically, we provide design, fabrication and experimental data for a low-pressure head hydro Tesla micro-turbine.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Small Scale Tesla Turbines
Volume 3: Coal, Biomass, Hydrogen, and Alternative Fuels; Cycle Innovations; Electric Power; Industrial and Cogeneration; Organic Rankine Cycle Power Systems, 2019Abstract Interest in small scale turbines is growing mainly for small scale power generation and energy harvesting. Conventional bladed turbines impose manufacturing limitations and higher cost, which hinder their implementation at small scale.

Improvement of a Theoretical Analysis Method for Tesla Turbines
Volume 6C: Turbomachinery, 2013A Tesla turbine makes use of a fluid’s viscous force to cause rotation of a set of closed spaced disks. In this paper, the theoretical analysis method proposed by Carey et al in 2010 was improved, and the design method has taken the pressure drop occurring in the rotor into consideration in order to approach its physics condition of flow.

Tesla turbine for energy conversion: An automotive application
2012 IEEE Colloquium on Humanities, Science and Engineering (CHUSER), 2012This project is to design and fabricate the Tesla turbine with gas as working fluid and looking at the potential of installation a Tesla turbine onto the car in order to utilize those energy which originally generated from vehicle's engine and loss to environment due to drag force, and convert partial back to electrical energy and store within battery ...

The fluid dynamics of the rotating flow in a Tesla disc turbine
European Journal of Mechanics - B/Fluids, 2013Abstract The flow induced by rotating discs has attracted some of the greatest minds in fluid dynamics like von Karman and Batchelor, and still is a vigorously active research area. In comparison, the available analysis of the rotating flow in the narrow gaps among closely-spaced co-axial multiple discs of a Tesla turbine, which produces power, is ...

Numerical Simulation of a Compressed Air Driven Tesla Turbine
Volume 2: Simple and Combined Cycles; Advanced Energy Systems and Renewables (Wind, Solar and Geothermal); Energy Water Nexus; Thermal Hydraulics and CFD; Nuclear Plant Design, Licensing and Construction; Performance Testing and Performance Test Codes; Student Paper Competition, 2014This paper presents the Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis of a Tesla bladeless turbine using compressed air as the working fluid. Multiple flow configurations are analyzed using both Laminar and the turbulent behaviors. The loading coefficient and the efficiency of turbines is evaluated for both the 2D and 3D cases.
