I was interested to read the article by Tydeman et al on sus-pected testicular torsion. I was confused, however, by the conclusion that general surgical trainees were less likely to discuss the management with the ‘on-call consultant’. The questionnaire used by the investigators asked registrars if they would make the on-call ‘urology’ consultant aware.

Testicular Function After Torsion [PDF]
A group of 20 patients with torsion was investigated. The study indicated that immediate surgical intervention with a period of torsion of the testis of less than 6 h will prevent impairment of testicle function. The histology of testicular biopsies taken from such patients revealed only interstitial oedema and, at the most, partial necrosis.
