Cellular Immunology of Tetanus Toxoid
1995Studies on tetanus neurotoxin (TeNT) as an antigen have been informative at a basic level and are continuing to expand our knowledge of what makes an effective immunogen, and how we might be able to exploit the biochemistry and physiology of antigen-presenting cells (APC) to make yet more effective immunogens. This review deals with two related aspects

Abstract The need for active immunization against Clostridium tetani infection is evident, especially in those instances in which it has been necessary for industrial and constructional workers to receive numerous prophylactic injections of tetanus antitoxin over a comparatively short period of time owing to various individual injuries ...

To the Editor:— In your question and answer section ( 198 :493, 1966) there appears a query about reactions to tetanus toxoid. My answer to the question would differ completely from that of Dr. Dull. In my experience, local allergic reactions to tetanus toxoid are fairly common and generalized reactions are not rare.

The flocculation of tetanus toxin and toxoid. I
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, 19541. The flocculation of tetanus toxins and toxoids produced in a modified Tarozzi broth was made the subject of an exhaustive study. 2. At least three flocculation zones were found. 3. The lowest flocculation value always proved to agree with the true point of equivalence of the antitoxin-binding (A.B.V.). 4.

To the Editor.— Jacobs and colleagues are to be commended for their review of reactions to tetanus toxoid (1982; 247:40). The authors have demonstrated effectively that a history of reaction to tetanus toxoid correlates poorly with the subsequent reactions to intradermal skin testing with dilute solutions of tetanus toxoid; only 1.4% of such patients ...

Abstract. The method of sensitized latex particle agglutination which we have devised allows the selection of samples of plasma for the preparation of immunoglobulins. The population of thus selected samples is the same as is selected by the in vivo test, having a titer ≥6 IU/ml.

Tetanus-Toxoid Emergency Boosters
New England Journal of Medicine, 1969Abstract Measurement of tetanus antibody titers in 143 pediatric patients receiving routine and emergency immunization according to current practice showed that none who had received four or more injections failed to maintain the accepted protective level of 0.01 AU per milliliter for any measured interval.

To the Editor.— I would like to report a patient who received an overdose of "tetanus toxoid, fluid." A total dose of 3.8 ml (2.0 ml intramuscularly in one buttock, 1.6 ml in the other, and 0.2 ml subcutaneously in the left deltoid region) was inadvertently administered to a 32-year-old female employee.

To the Editor:— In his answer to the question whether encephalitis might follow an injection of tetanus toxoid (The Journal, Jan. 14, page 170) the consultant stated, "Encephalitis, however, has not been reported as a spontaneous complication of tetanus antitoxin or toxoid." This statement, perhaps, should be modified in light of a report entitled ...
