Metabolism of Extracellular phospholipids in Tetrahymena pyriformis

The Journal of Biochemistry, 1987
We studied the metabolism of phospholipids exogenously added to cultures of the protozoan, Tetrahymena pyriformis. Tetrahymena cells were found to metabolize the extracellular phospholipids and the fatty acyl chains of the latter were accumulated predominantly as a form of triacylglycerol in the cells. This metabolism was considered to be initiated via

The regulation of tyrosine aminotransferase in Tetrahymena, pyriformis

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1969
Abstract The activity of tyrosine aminotransferase in the ciliated protozoa Tetrahymena , pyriformis is several-fold higher than in rat liver during all growth-phases of the organism grown in proteose-peptone or synthetic media. Glucose represses enzyme activity in all growth-phases while the absence of acetate greatly stimulates enzyme ...

Uptake of Phenylalanine by Tetrahymena pyriformis

Nature, 1962
THE nutritional requirements of Tetrahymena pyriformis are well known, and it can be cultured in a chemically defined medium. Nevertheless, some aspects of its feeding are still not clear. In nature the organisms are believed to feed phagotrophically on bacteria1. In synthetic media, however, food vacuoles are rarely seen.

Conversion of glucose to glycogen in Tetrahymena pyriformis

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1968
Abstract The observation that Tetrahymena pyriformis produces large amounts of glycogen when grown in a glucose containing medium has been confirmed. The glycogen content per cell in late stationary phase cells is several-fold that of logarithmically growing cells.

The toxicity of α-Tomatine to Tetrahymena pyriformis

Food and Cosmetics Toxicology, 1979
Abstract The toxic effect of α-tomatine at the molecular level was studied using Tetrahymena pyriformis as a model cell system. α-Tomatine at 16·5 ± 4·4 ppm inhibited cell growth by 50%. Cells exposed to α-tomatine increased in volume, and when concentrations were greater than 37·5 ppm, cell lysis started.

Serotype Expression and Transformation in Tetrahymena pyriformis

The Journal of Protozoology, 1969
SYNOPSIS. Of the 4 serotypes of Tetrahymena pyriformis, syngen 1, the H (expressed at 20–35 C) and T (expressed at 36–40 C) serotypes and their genetic bases have received the most attention. The present study describes the L and I serotypes, considers their transformations to and from the H serotype, and compares inter‐locus repression with allelic ...

Studies on the biosynthesis of glucolipid in Tetrahymena pyriformis

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1973
Abstract 1. 1. Cell-free preparations from the protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis rapidly convert glucose from UDP[14C]glucose into a chloroform-soluble form. 2. 2. The reaction has been shown to require UDPglucose and Mg2+ in addition to the enzyme and is reversed in the presence of an excess of U DP but not UMP or other nucleoside ...

Methylation of ribosomal proteins in Tetrahymena pyriformis

Biochimie, 1981

Preparation of Chromosomes of Tetrahymena Pyriformis for Photomicrography

Stain Technology, 1956
Conjugating animals of the protozoan, Tetrahymena pryiformis, were affixed to cover slips by means of Nissenbaum's fluid, followed immediately by 1:3 acetic-alcohol for 18–24 hr. After fixation, the material was transferred through a descending alcohol series to water, then hydrolyzed in 1 N HCl, washed in water, followed by immersion in 45% acetic ...
