Comparative Analysis of Mechanical Properties of Arolium and Euplantulae in Medauroidea extradentata (Phasmatodea), Using In Vivo Atomic Force Microscopy, Supports Functional Specialization of both Types of Attachment Pads

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 12, Issue 19, October 6, 2025.
Stick insects use two different types of smooth attachment pads for locomotion, the pretarsal arolium for adhesion and tarsal euplantulae for friction. With atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements on these pads on living and conscious insects, this work demonstrates that each pad exhibits distinct material properties aligned with its function.

Rthoptera: Standardised insect bioacoustics in R

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, Page 1084-1094, June 2025.
Abstract Almost 100 years after the dawn of insect bioacoustics, freely available and robust analysis tools and protocols are still needed. We introduce Rthoptera, an open‐source R package designed for robust analysis of insect acoustic signals. It delivers accurate temporal and spectral measurements, along with intuitive visualisations, through a ...

Selective Predation and Chick Provisioning Rhythms in the European Scops Owl (Otus scops)

open access: yesDiversity
This study analyzes the provisioning strategy of the European Scops Owl (Otus scops) via continuous video monitoring of a breeding pair in a peri-urban Mediterranean forest in NE Spain (n = 724 deliveries).

Grassland nature reserves safeguard a high species richness and biomass of grasshoppers

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 11, Page 2739-2750, November 2024.
To preserve biodiversity in nature reserves, we recommend (i) leaving uncut refuges during mowing and (ii) blocking drainage to stabilise the water level. Both measures contribute to a high species number and abundance of grasshoppers and many other insects. An effective conservation measure to promote species richness in the wider countryside would be

Listening to the response of bat and bush‐cricket communities to management regimes of powerline clearings

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 6, Issue 6, June 2024.
We recorded the acoustic activity underneath 35 powerline clearings in two French forests in 2021. Increased acoustic activity reveals increased movement opportunities for bats and enhanced habitat suitability for thermophilic bush‐cricket species. Integrated vegetation management (IVM) shows limited direct benefits for bat communities but fosters ...

Helical chromonema coiling is conserved in eukaryotes

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 118, Issue 5, Page 1284-1300, June 2024.
Significance Statement We summarize evidence from more than 140 years of controversial research that metaphase chromosomes of single‐celled protozoa, plants, and animals are formed by a helically coiled chromatin thread called the chromonema. We hypothesize that this coiling is of fundamental biological significance for handling large eukaryotic ...

Micro‐ and macroclimate interactively shape diversity, niches and traits of Orthoptera communities along elevational gradients

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 30, Issue 5, May 2024.
Abstract Aim Temperature is one of the main drivers shaping species diversity and assembly processes. Yet, site‐specific effects of the local microclimate on species and trait compositions of insect communities have rarely been assessed along macroclimatic temperature clines. Location Bavarian Alps, Germany.

Urbanization reduces Orthoptera diversity and changes community structure towards mobile species

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 17, Issue 2, Page 259-272, March 2024.
Orthoptera sampling at 42 dry grassland sites in Berlin revealed negative effects of urbanization on taxonomic and functional diversity. The proportion of sealed soil, the vegetation cover and the plant richness at the sampling sites had an effect on the species composition, but these effects were mostly species specific.
