A hybrid approach to text compression
Proceedings of IEEE Data Compression Conference (DCC'94), 2002Text compression schemes have sometimes been divided into two classes: symbolwise methods, which form a source model, typically using a finite context to predict symbols; and dictionary methods, which replace phrases (groups of symbols) in the input with a code. It is possible to decompose some dictionary methods into equivalent symbolwise methods. The

LZW Text Compression in Haskell
1993Functional programming is largely untested in the industrial environment. This paper summarises the results of a study into the suitability of Haskell in the area of text compression, an area with definite commercial interest. Our program initially performs very poorly in comparison with a version written in C.

On Compression-Based Text Classification
2005Compression-based text classification methods are easy to apply, requiring virtually no preprocessing of the data. Most such methods are character-based, and thus have the potential to automatically capture non-word features of a document, such as punctuation, word-stems, and features spanning more than one word.

Data handling and text compression
Journal of Information Science, 1992Data compression has a function in text storage and data handling, but not at the level of compressing data files The reason is that the decompression of such files adds a time delay to the retrieval process, and users can see this delay as a drawback of the system concerned Compression techniques can with benefit be applied to index files
