A Hough based algorithm for extracting text lines in handwritten documents

Proceedings of 3rd International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition, 2002
The method herein proposed detects text lines on handwritten pages which may include either lines oriented in several directions, erasures, or annotations between main lines. The method has a hypothesis-validation strategy which is iteratively activated until the end of the segmentation is reached.

Tree structure for word extraction from handwritten text lines

Eighth International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR'05), 2005
Word extraction from handwritten text lines usually involves the calculation of a line specific threshold which separates the gaps between words from the gaps inside the words in that line. We show that this approach can be improved if the decision about a gap is not only made in terms of a threshold, but also depends on the context of that gap, i.e ...

An Adaptive Script-Independent Block-Based Text Line Extraction

2010 20th International Conference on Pattern Recognition, 2010
In this paper, a novel script-independent block-based text line extraction technique is proposed for multi-skewed document images. Three parameters are defined to adopt the method with various writings. Extensive experiments on different datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms previous ...

Integrated text and line-art extraction from a topographic map

International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition, 2000
Our proposed approach to text and line-art extraction requires accurately locating a text-string box and identifying external line vectors incident on the box. The results of extrapolating these vectors inside the box are passed to an experimental single-font optical char- acter reader (OCR) program, specically trained for the font used for street ...

Skew correction and line extraction in binarized printed text images

2015 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2015
Skew correction and text line extraction are essential steps for optical character recognition (OCR) applications. For this purpose, numerous approaches were developed, which conduct the analysis primarily in document images. However, they often suffer from limited detection range and application-specific parameter tuning.

Text Line Extraction Using DMLP Classifiers for Historical Manuscripts

2013 12th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition, 2013
This paper proposes a novel text line extraction method for historical documents. The method works in two steps. In the first step, layout analysis is performed to recognize the physical structure of a given document using a classification technique, more precisely the pixels of a coloured document image are classified into five classes: text-block ...

Skew Correction and Text Line Extraction of Arabic Historical Documents

2019
The field of optical character recognition for the Arabic text is not getting much attention by researchers comparing to Latin text. It is only in the last two decades that this field was being exploited, due to the complexity of Arabic writing and the fact that it demands a critical step which is segmentation; first from text to lines, then from lines

Multioriented and Curved Text Lines Extraction From Indian Documents

IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, Part B (Cybernetics), 2004
There are printed artistic documents where text lines of a single page may not be parallel to each other. These text lines may have different orientations or the text lines may be curved shapes. For the optical character recognition (OCR) of these documents, we need to extract such lines properly.

A robust and multiscale document image segmentation for block line/text line structures extraction

Proceedings of 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition, 2002
This paper presents a new approach dealing with the extraction of blocks of lines and with discrimination between the text line and nontext lines structures. This approach combines a multiresolution textural description of the document image with a cooperation between adjacent resolution levels.

Text-Line Extraction Using a Convolution of Isotropic Gaussian Filter with a Set of Line Filters

2011 International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition, 2011
Text-line extraction is a key task in document analysis. Methods based on an isotropic Gaussian filtering and ridge detection have shown good results. This paper describes performance improvements to these technique based on the use of a convolution of isotropic Gaussian filter with line filters. These new filter banks are motivated by a matched filter
