Texture Caches

IEEE Micro, 2012
This column examines the texture cache, an essential component of modern GPUs that plays an important role in achieving real-time performance when generating realistic images. GPUs have many components and the texture cache is only one of them. But it has a real impact on the performance of the GPU if rasterization and memory tiling are set up ...

Hierarchical textures

IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, 2000
Rich, interesting patterns create an oasis of aesthetic pleasure between the arid lands of complete randomness and complete order. In addition to their inherent beauty, patterns prove useful in graphics when we use them as textures. Textures were originally used to add color detail to shapes. Today, textures control everything from shape details to the

Texture Splicing

Computer Graphics Forum, 2009
AbstractWe propose a new texture editing operation called texture splicing. For this operation, we regard a texture as having repetitive elements (textons) seamlessly distributed in a particular pattern. Taking two textures as input, texture splicing generates a new texture by selecting the texton appearance from one texture and distribution from the ...

Floating Textures

Computer Graphics Forum, 2008
AbstractWe present a novel multi‐view, projective texture mapping technique. While previous multi‐view texturing approaches lead to blurring and ghosting artefacts if 3D geometry and/or camera calibration are imprecise, we propose a texturing algorithm that warps (“floats”) projected textures during run‐time to preserve crisp, detailed texture ...

Expressive textures

Proceedings of the 1st international conference on Computer graphics, virtual reality and visualisation, 2001
If a moving image is more expressive than words or than a still image, then an animated facial expression can explain more in depth the feelings of a virtual character. Facial animation has been used in many applications, from entertainment to research on virtual humans and tele-presence.

On contour texture

Proceedings. 1991 IEEE Computer Society Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 2002
It is suggested that non-smooth or complex boundaries are processed by the visual system so as to obtain a simple abstract description, called contour texture, which contains much less information than that provided by the location of all points of the contour.

On the Structure of Texture

Perception, 1976
This paper examines the structure underlying textural patterns. To this end, aspects of a model for texture are developed on the basis of both perceptual processes of the observer and structural properties of the patterns. Local constructs called primitives serve as generators for globally perfect, but unobservable, ideal textures.
