Abstract Shear and compression strengths of individual carrots were measured with the Instron Universal Testing Machine. Compression correlated highly, but shear poorly, with sensory hardness as judged by compressing and flexing. The study confirmed the usefullness of the coefficient of compression in predicting textural quality of carrots.

We present metamaterial textures---3D printed surface geometries that can perform a controlled transition between two or more textures. Metamaterial textures are integrated into 3D printed objects and allow designing how the object interacts with the environment and the user's tactile sense.

This column examines the texture cache, an essential component of modern GPUs that plays an important role in achieving real-time performance when generating realistic images. GPUs have many components and the texture cache is only one of them. But it has a real impact on the performance of the GPU if rasterization and memory tiling are set up ...

Rich, interesting patterns create an oasis of aesthetic pleasure between the arid lands of complete randomness and complete order. In addition to their inherent beauty, patterns prove useful in graphics when we use them as textures. Textures were originally used to add color detail to shapes. AbstractWe propose a new texture editing operation called texture splicing. For this operation, we regard a texture as having repetitive elements (textons) seamlessly distributed in a particular pattern. Taking two textures as input, texture splicing generates a new texture by selecting the texton appearance from one texture and distribution from the ...

AbstractWe present a novel multi‐view, projective texture mapping technique. While previous multi‐view texturing approaches lead to blurring and ghosting artefacts if 3D geometry and/or camera calibration are imprecise, we propose a texturing algorithm that warps (“floats”) projected textures during run‐time to preserve crisp, detailed texture ...

If a moving image is more expressive than words or than a still image, then an animated facial expression can explain more in depth the feelings of a virtual character. Facial animation has been used in many applications, from entertainment to research on virtual humans and tele-presence.
