Abstract. In the Azores the gastropod Thais haemastoma shows varying degrees of imposex, the induction of male sex characters in the female. It is inferred that imposex in T. haemastoma is caused by tributyltin (TBT) associated with boats using organotin‐based antifouling paints.

The cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase or mixed function oxidase (MFO) system is a widely distributed enzyme system involved in the detoxication of foreign organic compounds (xenobiotics) taken up by organisms. Increases in the activities of the MFO system, occur with exposure of the organism to organic xenobiotics and such responses in the field have been

The relationship between individual energy budgets and genetic variability was examined in Thais haemastoma acclimated to 7.5, 20, and 35‰S (parts per thousand salinity) at 21 C. Energy budgets were determined by measuring rates of ingestion, absorption efficiencies, oxygen consumption, and ammonia and primary amine excretion.

Abstract Larvae of many shallow-water near-shore tropical gastropod species appear to have planktonic durations of several months or more and therefore may have great dispersal capabilities. To investigate physiological factors possibly related to length of planktonic life, this study documented the larval bioenergetics and carbon budgets for one ...

Adult oyster drills Thais haemastoma canaliculata (Gray) were acclimated to 10, 12.5, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40%. S at 20, 22, 28, and 30°C. Snails deposited capsules when acclimated to 12.5, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35%. S at 22 and 28° C. The osmolality of the intracapsular fluid was within 13 mOsm (higher/lower) of the ambient culture water in all ...

A notable range extension of the southern drill,Thais haemastoma floridana, into Chincoteague Bay
Live specimens of the southern drill have recently been collected in the Chincoteague Bay area of Maryland and Virginia. This extends its known northern limit some 150 miles beyond its previously recognized range. Evidence from dredged shells, however, indicates that the species was established at a much earlier date in the Maryland part of ...

Choline esters and imidazole acids in extracts of the hypobranchial gland of Thais Haemastoma
Comparative and General Pharmacology, 19731. 1. Methanol and acetone extracts of the hypobranchial gland (dye-secreting area) of the two gasteropod molluscs Thais haemastoma and Thais haemastoma floridana contain large amounts of dihydromurexine (up to 12–17 mg. per g. fresh tissue) and senecioylcholine (up to 15–18 mg.

Effects of varying the amplitude and duration of tidal fluctuations of salinity upon the hemolymph osmotic and ionic composition of the southern oyster drill Thais haemastoma were studied. The composition of diluent was varied during one experiment to approximate Mississippi River water. Snails were also subjected to a diurnal 20-10-20%.
