Pharmacological investigation of salivary gland of Thais haemastoma (clench)

The salivary gland extract of Thais haemastoma was found to be a powerful vasodilator and hypotensive agent. When the extract was administered i.v. to anaesthetized cats at a dose of 5–20 mg per kg (expressed in terms of the crude gland) it produced a sustained fall in the blood pressure and a distinct bradycardia.

The aqueous extract of the hypobranchial glands of Thais haemastoma, administered intravenously to anesthetized cats at doses equivalent to 60–90 mg. of fresh gland/kg. body weight, produced an increase in the blood pressure accompanied by tachycardia.

Abstract. In the Azores the gastropod Thais haemastoma shows varying degrees of imposex, the induction of male sex characters in the female. It is inferred that imposex in T. haemastoma is caused by tributyltin (TBT) associated with boats using organotin‐based antifouling paints.

The relationship between individual energy budgets and genetic variability was examined in Thais haemastoma acclimated to 7.5, 20, and 35‰S (parts per thousand salinity) at 21 C.
