Antenatal screening for thalassemia minor.

This report describes the findings of a screening program of 918 obstetric patients for thalassemia minor. Patients with erythrocyte mean corpuscular volume (MCV) less than 80 fL on initial complete blood count were evaluated with serum iron, total iron binding capacity, quantitative hemoglobin electrophoresis, and trial of iron replacement.

Difficulties in diagnosing thalassemia minor

Here we outline a practical approach to the detection of thalassemias in some clinical settings. Any patient with a low mean corpuscular volume (MCV) with or without anemia or a neonatal screening result indicating possible presence of thalassemia minor needs evaluation by a hematologist.
