Plastic Type and Condition Have Minimal Impact on Associated Marine Biofilm Communities

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 27, Issue 12, December 2025.
Plastics serve as a novel surface for microbial colonisation, yet their ecological functioning remains poorly understood. Here, we characterise microbial communities colonising plastic in the marine environment over time using a multi‐omics approach, highlighting previously reported plastic‐degrading taxa and the degradation potential within these ...

Partitioning ofThaumarchaeotapopulations along environmental gradients in high mountain lakes [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Ecology, 2012
We investigated the spatial distribution and diversity of ammonia-oxidizing Archaea (AOA) across gradients of pH, trophic status and altitude in a set of high mountain lakes (Limnological Observatory of the Pyrenees, north-east Spain). Both phylogeny- and taxonomy-based approaches revealed well-defined AOA community patterns with pH as the main ...

Community Composition and Abundance of Bacterial, Archaeal and Nitrifying Populations in Savanna Soils on Contrasting Bedrock Material in Kruger National Park, South Africa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Savannas cover at least 13% of the global terrestrial surface and are often nutrient limited, especially by nitrogen. To gain a better understanding of their microbial diversity and the microbial nitrogen cycling in savanna soils, soil samples were ...

Substrate Effect on the Contribution of Ammonium and Urea to Marine Nitrification and Nitrous Oxide Production

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 27, Issue 10, October 2025.
The urea to ammonium concentration ratio is a good predictor of the relative importance of urea and ammonium to nitrite and N2O production in the ocean. In addition, the urea to ammonium ratio may be a key factor in shaping the genetic capability of marine ammonia‐oxidising archaea for urea utilisation.

Spatiotemporal Distribution of Key Pelagic Microbes in a Seasonal Oxygen-Deficient Coastal Upwelling System of the Eastern South Pacific Ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
The strong seasonal variability in physical-chemical conditions of the Eastern South Pacific Ocean creates an ideal setting to study spatiotemporal distribution of key marine microbial communities. We herein report a nearly 4-year-long time series of the

Variability in Microbial Community Composition and Function Between Different Niches Within a Coral Reef [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
To explore how microbial community composition and function varies within a coral reef ecosystem, we performed metagenomic sequencing of seawater from four niches across Heron Island Reef, within the Great Barrier Reef.

Cultivating the macroalgal holobiont: effects of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture on the microbiome of Ulva rigida (chlorophyta) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Ulva is a ubiquitous macroalgal genus of commercial interest. Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems promise large-scale production of macroalgae due to their high productivity and environmental sustainability.

Biodiversity in mountain soils above the treeline

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 5, Page 1877-1949, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Biological diversity in mountain ecosystems has been increasingly studied over the last decade. This is also the case for mountain soils, but no study to date has provided an overall synthesis of the current state of knowledge. Here we fill this gap with a first global analysis of published research on cryptogams, microorganisms, and fauna in ...

Cropland‐To‐Miscanthus Conversion Increases Sulfur Availability and Shifts Microbial Pattern Enhancing Sulfur Cycle in Northern China

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 17, Issue 10, October 2025.
Long‐term cultivation of Miscanthus without fertilization, shows great potential in bioenergy and ecological services, significantly modifies soil microbial communities and the sulfur cycle. 15‐years Miscanthus fields showed substantial increases in soil sulfate (SO42−, 47.4%), total sulfur (13.3%), and available sulfur (156.4%), alongside an 8.8 ...

Metagenomic analysis of nitrogen and methane cycling in the Arabian Sea oxygen minimum zone [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Oxygen minimum zones (OMZ) are areas in the global ocean where oxygen concentrations drop to below one percent. Low oxygen concentrations allow alternative respiration with nitrate and nitrite as electron acceptor to become prevalent in these areas ...
