Heterotrophic Thaumarchaea with Small Genomes Are Widespread in the Dark Ocean

open access: yesmSystems, 2020
The Thaumarchaeota is a diverse archaeal phylum comprising numerous lineages that play key roles in global biogeochemical cycling, particularly in the ocean.

Membrane interaction of cyanobacterial and chloroplast ESCRT‐III proteins

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 126, Issue 1, April 2026.
SUMMARY More than three decades ago, the inner membrane‐associated protein of 30 kDa (IM30), also known as Vipp1, was identified in pea chloroplasts to bind to the chloroplast inner envelope membrane. IM30/Vipp1 is a membrane‐associated and soluble stromal protein and is proposed to mediate vesicle formation.

Oxidation of urea‐derived nitrogen by thaumarchaeota‐dominated marine nitrifying communities [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, 2016
Summary Urea nitrogen has been proposed to contribute significantly to nitrification by marine thaumarchaeotes. These inferences are based on distributions of thaumarchaeote urease genes rather than activity measurements. We found that ammonia oxidation rates were always higher than oxidation rates of urea‐derived

The large-scale distribution of ammonia oxidizers in paddy soils is driven by soil pH, geographic distance and climatic factors

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2015
Paddy soils distribute widely from temperate to tropical regions, and are characterized by intensive nitrogen fertilization practices in China. Mounting evidence has confirmed the functional importance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB)

Interannual and (multi-)decadal variability in the sedimentary BIT index of Lake Challa, East Africa, over the past 2200 years: assessment of the precipitation proxy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The branched vs. isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) index is based on the relative abundance of branched tetraether lipids (brGDGTs) and the isoprenoidal GDGT crenarchaeol.

Microbial regulation of global macroalgal blooms (green tides): From holobiont interactions to bloom dynamics and biogeochemistry

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 2, March 2026.
Abstract Green tides caused by Ulva species have become one of the most serious marine ecological disasters, now impacting many coastal nations around the world. Although climatic and environmental drivers of these macroalgal blooms are well recognized, growing evidence identifies Ulva‐associated microbiota as potential pivotal regulators of bloom ...

Light and temperature control the seasonal distribution of thaumarchaeota in the South Atlantic bight [PDF]

open access: yesThe ISME Journal, 2018
Abstract Mid-summer peaks in the abundance of Thaumarchaeota and nitrite concentration observed on the Georgia, USA, coast could result from in situ activity or advection of populations from another source. We collected data on the distribution of Thaumarchaeota, ammonia-oxidizing betaproteobacteria (AOB), Nitrospina, environmental ...

Chemical Speciation of Copper in a Salt Marsh Estuary and Bioavailability to Thaumarchaeota [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The concentrations of dissolved copper (Cud), copper-binding ligands, thiourea-type thiols, and humic substances (HSCu) were measured in estuarine waters adjacent to Sapelo Island, Georgia, USA, on a monthly basis from April to December 2014.

The role of the gut microbiome in the regulation of high‐altitude adaptation

open access: yesiMeta, Volume 5, Issue 1, February 2026.
This study is the first to elucidate mechanisms of high‐altitude adaptation from the perspective of the rumen ecosystem by using indigenous yaks and Holstein cows that have lived at high altitude since birth as comparative models. Through a systematic comparison of their rumen ecology using multi‐omics approaches—including rumen metagenomics ...

The Role of Heterotrophic Bacteria and Archaea in the Transformation of Lignin in the Open Ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
The pelagic ocean receives terrigenous inputs of a range of organic compounds; however, the role that this terrigenous material plays in the ocean carbon cycle and biological pump is not entirely understood, and questions remain as to how oceanic cycles ...
