However, despite the awareness of the threats to the Baltic Sea environment and early management initiatives, the major threats still remain. It is probable that the main cause of the poverty of the Baltic Sea in species is its low salinity. Apparently also complicated and variable climatic conditions as well as the anthropogenic impact exert their regionally varying pressure. Regional differences in environment are the main background of variation of life forms in the Baltic Sea.
