In the late 1830s, Jane Porter became acquainted with the writer and diplomat David Urquhart. Born in the Scottish Highlands, Urquhart travelled widely in his youth, gained the acquaintance and support of Jeremy Bentham and Sir Herbert Taylor (George IV’s private secretary), and eventually attained a diplomatic post in Constantinople.
