Monte Carlo Methods for Estimating Interfacial Free Energies and Line Tensions [PDF]
Excess contributions to the free energy due to interfaces occur for many problems encountered in the statistical physics of condensed matter when coexistence between different phases is possible (e.g. wetting phenomena, nucleation, crystal growth, etc.).

Resisting punching shear stress in reinforced concrete slabs
Punching shear failure is a major problem encountered in the design of reinforced concrete flat slabs. The utilization of shear reinforcement via shear studs or other means has become a choice for improving the punching shear capacity.

Finger patterns produced by thermomagnetic instability in superconductors [PDF]
A linear analysis of thermal diffusion and Maxwell equations is applied to study the thermomagnetic instability in a type-II superconducting slab. It is shown that the instability can lead to formation of spatially nonuniform distributions of magnetic ...

Oblique frozen modes in periodic layered media
We study the classical scattering problem of a plane electromagnetic wave incident on the surface of semi-infinite periodic stratified media incorporating anisotropic dielectric layers with special oblique orientation of the anisotropy axes.

Subwavelength imaging with opaque left-handed nonlinear lens
We introduce the concept of subwavelength imaging with an opaque nonlinear left-handed lens by generating the second-harmonic field. We consider a slab of composite left-handed metamaterial with quadratic nonlinear response and show that such a flat lens

Contact Lens with Moiré Patterns for High‐Precision Eye Tracking
This work presents a passive contact lens for high‐precision eye tracking, integrating a microscopic moiré grating label. The parallax‐induced shift of macroscopic moiré patterns enables angle measurement with 0.28° precision using a standard camera under ambient light.

Frontiers in earth sciences: new ideas and interpretation
A one-day symposium on new and conventional ideas in plate tectonics and Mediterranean geodynamics was held in Rome on February 19, 2003 at the headquarters of INGV. There were two main reasons for such an initiative.

Scale and Nature of Sulcification Patterns
Sulci are surface folds commonly seen in strained soft elastomers and form via a strongly subsubcriticalcritical, yet scale-free instability. Treating the threshold for nonlinear instability as a nonlinear critical point, we explain the nature of sulcus ...

Improvment of safety conditions of unstable rock slopes through the use of explosives [PDF]
The paper discusses operations aimed at creating a safer natural or man made rock slope by artificially inducing the displacement of unstable elements by blasting.

This work provides a novel interpretation of the nitrate reduction mechanism on iron oxides (FeOx) by employing constant‐potential density functional calculations and reports the design and synthesis of a robust and high‐performance Fe3O4/Fe‐N4‐C catalyst with remarkable Faradaic efficiency, current density, and stability under practical reaction ...
