The origins of the word ‘gospel’ lie with Paul, who derived it from the Isaianic proclamation of a messenger of good news (Isa. 52:7; 61:1–2) and its influence on Jesus. Paul uses the term to refer to the good news of Jesus’s death and resurrection, a message which brings salvation.

By examining how theologians and lay scholars should respond to the prosperity gospel, this article argues that theological criticism is less a matter of wholesale rejection of false views and more a matter of expanding partial views. Drawing on Pascal and Kierkegaard, I describe what dialectic means for Christian witness.
