Drivers for the Diversity of Mollusc Communities in Unique Calcareous Fen Habitats

open access: yesDiversity
The research was carried out in calcareous fen habitats which share coverage with Natura 2000 sites designated under the EU Habitats and the Birds Directive. A total of 27 taxa of molluscs were recorded: 23 gastropod and 4 bivalve species.

Habitat deterioration promotes the evolution of direct development in metamorphosing species [PDF]

open access: yesEvolution, 2020
Although metamorphosis is widespread in the animal kingdom, several species have evolved life-cycle modifications to avoid complete metamorphosis. Some species, for example, many salamanders and newts, have deleted the adult stage via a process called paedomorphosis.

Alignment of marine habitat data of the Maltese Islands to conform to the requirements of the EU habitats directive (Council Directive 92/43/EEC) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
In 1992 the European Union (henceforth referred to as the EU) adopted a Council Directive on the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora that became known as the ‘Habitats Directive’. This Directive contains a range of measures aimed at

Mistletoe‐ and Mussel‐Inspired Fabrication of Hierarchically Structured Protein‐Cellulose Scaffolds From Biomolecular Condensates

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Merging materials processing tricks inspired by mussel and mistletoe fiber fabrication, solutions of cationic mussel byssus proteins were mixed with modified anionic nanocrystalline cellulose, producing distinctive core‐shell condensates. Simple processing of condensate suspensions using freeze‐drying produced hierarchically structured porous protein ...
