The “Knight of Christ”: Christian Chivalry in the “Canticle”
2013The storyteller Franco Sacchetti, one of whose tales I quoted in chapter 2, relates how two Franciscan friars met the Englishman Sir John Hawkwood, a mercenary knight in Italy, in whose memory the grateful city of Florence put up a fresco by Uccello in Florence cathedral after his death in 1394. The friars greeted him very respectfully as “Monsignore,”
