The Neogene river valleys of the Middle Volga region are widespread, and their location mainly corresponds to the modern river network. This indicates the sustainability of development of river valleys during Neogene-Quaternary time. The Neogene river network was laid in the Late Miocene.

Communities of macroscopic red algae in rivers of the Upper Volga region and adjacent territories are considered. Their classification based on the Braun-Blanquet approach is proposed. Phytocoenoses belong to the class Lemaneetea fluviatilis and the order Lemaneetalia fluviatilis.
