Extending Theil's Inequality Index: Addressing Dynamic Convergence in the OECD

2003
Theil’s inequality index is used to measure convergence in 14 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries in terms of per capita income, per capita government and investment expenditures, and industrial employment. Results indicate that all four variables have converged over the sample period, 1950-1988.

The Theil Index in Sequences of Nested and Hierarchic Grouping Structures

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2000
This paper discusses the implications of the decomposition property of the Theil index in sequences of nested and hierarchic grouping structures, formalizing general results applicable to a generic sequence of grouping structures. A specific application to data on wages and employment by industrial classification to measure the evolution of wage ...

Decomposition of Regional Income Inequality and Neighborhood Component: A Spatial Theil Index [PDF]

open access: possible, 2014
In recent decades, spatial effects have been incorporated into mainstream economics. Nevertheless, although the addition of these spatial effects to the inequality indexes would be a natural extension in this line of research, to our knowledge, there are not contributions assessing neighborhood effects in measures of regional economic inequalities ...

Spatial Decomposition of Funding Inequality in China's Basic Education: A Four-Level Theil Index Analysis

Public Finance and Management, 2014
Various education finance and taxation reforms in the past several decades have substantially changed China's system for funding basic education, but the present system is still characterized by insufficient funding and large inequalities across ...

Poverty Measurement: An Index Related to a Theil Measure of Inequality

Journal of Business & Economic Statistics, 1989
A major problem that arises in measuring poverty is the adequate expression, in a poverty index, of the information from the incomes of individuals below the poverty line. This article evaluates several poverty indexes on the basis of their ability to satisfy five properties desirable for a poverty index.

The Balassa index meets the dissimilarity Theil index: a decomposition methodology for location studies [PDF]

open access: possible, 2006
It is well known that the broad concept of localisation has two connotations, namely, regional specialisation and industrial concentration. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce an entropy index of overall localisation suitable to conceptualise specialisation and concentration as the two sides of the same medal in a nested geographical ...

Aggregate Productivity Loss and the Theil Index of Inequality [PDF]

open access: possible, 2008
This paper suggests that the difference in the Theil indices of inequality between two economies approximately measures the relative loss of aggregate productivity caused by distortions in labor allocation. Moreover, the Theil index itself can be interpreted approximately as the possible maximum loss of aggregate productivity caused by these ...

Flexible Small Area Estimation of Theil Index using Mixtures of Beta

2021
The aim of the paper is to propose a small area estimation model for Theil Index, an entropy-based measure used to quantify economic inequality, industrial concentration and, in general, the disparity related to economic phenomena. We developed an area-level model of its relative index, i.e.

A Novel Node Splitting Criteria for Decision Trees Based on Theil Index

2012
The performance of detectors using decision trees can be improved by reducing the average height of the tree for faster detection. We propose a new attribute splitting criteria for decision tree construction using the concept of Theil index. The Theil index is a statistic used to measure economic inequality.
