Metabarcoding of Pollen Carried by Syrphids Reveals Novel Plant–Pollinator Interactions in a Protected Natural Area and Agricultural Sites

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Using DNA metabarcoding, this study investigates pollen transported by syrphids (Syrphidae) in the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park and agricultural sites in Northern Italy. The analysis reveals a high diversity of visited plant taxa, including previously undocumented plant–pollinator interactions.

Forage Plant Host and Early Feeding Choices Affect Spodoptera litura Feeding, Development and Egg‐Laying

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We assessed Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) performance on five common pasture plant species. Larvae consumed more dock, plantain and chicory per day than red or white clover, but with lower conversion efficiencies. Feeding on red clover reduced weights and egg laying, and lengthened development times compared with plantain.

Temperature Impacts on Mating and Oviposition of the Emerald Ash Borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae)

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
The emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis, threatens ash trees in North America and Europe. To assess the role of temperature on EAB reproduction, we reared adults at one of four temperatures (12°C, 15°C, 18°C, and 21°C) and measured reproductive success.

Photoperiod‐Regulated Thermal Tolerance of the Non‐Diapausing Insect Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae)

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Developmental photoperiodic exposure (photoacclimation) from egg to adult emergence alters thermal tolerance in Ceratitis capitata. Flies reared under contrasting photoperiods (0:24, 8:16, 14:10, and 24:0 L:D) showed significant shifts in both CTmin and CTmax, whereas adult‐only photoacclimation affected CTmax but not CTmin.

Environmental Stress Drives Plasticity in Sexual Bimaturism in the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens Linnaeus, 1758)

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We measured the plasticity in sexual bimaturism (SBM; differences between sexes in the timing of sexual maturity) in the black soldier fly (BSF) by exposing larvae to nutrient availability and humidity stress. Our results show that SBM can range between protandry and protogyny depending on the environmental quality. Additionally, we found the degree of

Performance of Leptopilina japonica Novković and Kimura (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) Under Fluctuating Temperature and Humidity

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Temperature is an important factor to determine the activity of insects. We tested the performance of the non‐native larval parasitoid Leptopilina japonica (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) under realistic climatic conditions to improve understanding about its ongoing spread and seasonal abundance.
