The present annex presents a brief overview of design considerations for making thematic maps. This overview cannot cover all the issues surrounding information content of maps, however; if necessary, a textbook should be consulted. Cartographers distinguish between several types of maps. General purpose maps serve as a reference frame for orientation.

Formalization of temporal thematic map contents
Proceedings of the ninth ACM international symposium on Advances in geographic information systems - GIS '01, 2001In this paper, we will focus on the temporal evolution of thematic maps in order to answer queries that refer to the time varying elements characterizing a thematic map, i.e., the geometric component of the map and the associated alphanumeric information.

A map is an abstract model of graphical signs that represents parts of the near-surface region of the earth or geospace. It is a model of reality, and like any model, the map simplifies and generalizes the reality. Maps represent a simplified and distorted image of reality and claim an informative, communicative as well as aesthetic use.
