ACM SIGMOD Record, 2003Generally, the properties and the relations of geographic features are captured visually by maps. These maps are processed at one time and for one purpose. The time and purpose are set by a work demand and a need for decisions is based on available information. The class of maps that are developed to aid in decisions are called thematic maps.

The present annex presents a brief overview of design considerations for making thematic maps. This overview cannot cover all the issues surrounding information content of maps, however; if necessary, a textbook should be consulted. Cartographers distinguish between several types of maps. General purpose maps serve as a reference frame for orientation.
