The Role of Surface Films in the Frictional Behavior of Lubricated and “Dry” Contacts—A Unifying Influence in Tribological Theory

A S L E Transactions, 1982
The paper identifies the essential physical ingredients of tribological systems. Using a simple model incorporating surface roughness and a surface film, the general behavior of both solid and lubricated films may be anticipated. Nonetheless, several important gaps in our physical knowledge of contacts are identified.
