Diagnostic and Therapeutic Phlebotomy in Hemochromatosis with Anemia
New England Journal of Medicine, 1957THIS report is concerned principally with the correction, by means of repeated phlebotomies, of moderate anemia and neutropenia, probably caused by hypersplenism, in a patient with idiopathic hemochromatosis. In the United States, phlebotomies are most often performed for reinfusion of blood to a designated or nondesignated recipient at a later time. These are known, respectively, as autologous or allogenic donations. For a few rare blood disorders, however, phlebotomy is performed as a medical intervention for disease management.

Adverse effects of therapeutic phlebotomies: Prospective study of 587 procedures
TransfusionAbstractBackgroundTherapeutic phlebotomy (TP), a widely used medical procedure, can be performed on diverse patients with iron overload or polyglobulia. However, its adverse events are not well known as most of the information on phlebotomy is derived from healthy blood donors (0.1%–5.3%).
