Thermal and Environmental Barrier Coatings (TBCs/EBCs) for Turbine Engines
2013Abstract This article presents a summary of the current and new materials and processing techniques for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and environmental barrier coatings (EBCs). Different thermal spraying and postspraying processing techniques are required to produce coatings with optimal performance.

Ceramic top layers of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) have gained increasing importance as thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) of heat exposed components in advanced gas turbines. In air plasma sprayed (APS) coatings the low inherent thermal conductivity of YSZ is further enhanced by the numerous microstructural defects from the spraying process. However,

Columnar Structured Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) by Suspension Plasma Spraying (SPS)
International Thermal Spray Conference, 2014Abstract In this study, a suspension containing Mg-Al-spinel nanopowder was deposited on bond-coated IN738 and stainless steel disks by suspension plasma spraying with and without substrate cooling. Coating surfaces and cross-sections were examined by SEM, EDS, and XRD analysis and thermal cycling tests were performed.

Microstructural effect on the radiative properties of YSZ thermal barrier coatings (TBCs)
International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2014Abstract Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are not the pure bulk materials, and they contain many different micro/nano structures caused by the plasma spraying process. The microstructures in the coatings play a very important role on mechanical and thermal properties, therefore, the coating properties differ hugely from those of the corresponding bulk

A New Design Methodology of Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) for Internal Combustion Engines
ASME 2020 Heat Transfer Summer Conference, 2020Abstract Currently available Internal combustion (IC) engines contribute 25% of the total world energy consumption. IC engines convert only 40% of the fuel energy into the indicated power[1]. Roughly, 30 percent of heat energy is lost from the combustion chamber to the environment.

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have been applied to gas turbine blades and vanes for providing thermal protection and corrosion resistance. One of the major concerns for application of TBCs is their reliability and durability. It has been established that the oxidation of bond coat underlying yttria stablized zirconia (YSZ) is a dominant factor in ...
