Thermal Buckling of a Bimetallic Beams
Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1969A study is made of the buckling or snapping characteristics of a rigidly supported, pin-ended bimetallic beam, as influenced by the mean coefficient of expansion and difference in coefficients of expansion of the bimetallic beam elements. It is found that the snapping or sudden buckling that is attributed to a bimetallic beam thermostat is difficult to

THERMAL BUCKLING OF ELASTIC PLATES
Journal of Thermal Stresses, 1985This paper is concerned with buckling of an initially stress‐free, elastic plate subjected to a nonuniform temperature field. The novelty of the presentation given here consists, first, of the derivation of the infinite set of algebraic equations that is associated with the buckling matrix, for a temperature field that produces a combined action of ...

On localized thermal track buckling
International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, 1981Abstract The thermal buckling of a railroad track in the lateral plane is analyzed with the track modelled as an elastic beam resting on an elastic-plastic foundation representing the ballast. The nonlinearity of the resistance forces exerted by the ballast on the track is accounted for, both in the lateral and axial directions.

Thermal Buckling of a Bimetallic Strip
Journal of Vibration and Acoustics, 1984A theoretical foundation is provided for the difficulties encountered in manufacturing a snap acting bimetallic strip thermostatic which will snap within ±10 degrees of a prescribed temperature. It is obtained by modifying Timoshenko’s pioneering analysis to allow for a realistic support frame whose coefficient of thermal expansion differs from the ...

Thermal buckling of nonhomogeneous plates
Nuclear Engineering and Design, 1968Abstract Thermal buckling of flat plates is treated through the use of a method utilizing the second variation of the potential energy. The method is developed in detail for simply supported plates where the modulus of elasticity varies as a consequence of nonuniform heating.

Thermal buckling of rectangular plates
International Journal of Solids and Structures, 2001Abstract This paper presents the results of a thermal buckling analysis for clamped, rectangular plates based on energy considerations. The analysis reveals that both of the edge length to thickness ratios ( a / h , b / h ) are independent parameters, i.e. fixing the aspect ratio ( a / b ) is not sufficient to ensure a unique problem.

Thermal Bending and Buckling of Plates
1976The theory of plates at uniform temperature and loaded perpendicular to the midplane is well developed, and an extensive literature exists on the subject. In this chapter we shall extend this theory to include non-uniform temperature.

Thermal buckling of pavement slabs
Transport, 2005A continuous pavement slab subject to an increase in temperature will experience compressive stress which, if sufficiently large, can cause an uplift buckling failure. In contrast with the more familiar and relatively simple buckling of columns, this thermal uplift buckling of pavement slabs will generally occur with little warning, possibly with ...

Thermal Buckling of a Circular Plate
The Journal of the Royal Aeronautical Society, 1967SummaryThis note considers the buckling of a circular lenticular plate subjected to a temperature which varies parabolically in its plane. The novel feature in the analysis is the determination of the stiffening effect due to the prevention of deflections, but not slopes, along a diameter.
