Fluctuating shells under pressure

open access: yes, 2012
Thermal fluctuations strongly modify the large length-scale elastic behavior of crosslinked membranes, giving rise to scale-dependent elastic moduli. While thermal effects in flat membranes are well understood, many natural and artificial microstructures

Indirect Band Edge and Chain‐Locked Linear Dichroism in the Quasi‐1D Van der Waals Antiferromagnet AgCrP2S6

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
AgCrP2S6 reveals a momentum‐indirect band edge (≈1.35 eV) and chain‐locked linear dichroism: the first direct transitions emerge at 1.6–1.8 eV for E||a. Resonant Raman and photoemission corroborate this assignment. In ACPS/graphene heterostructures, photocurrent turns on above ≈1.5 eV and follows the same polarization selection rules (anisotropy ≈0.53),

Surface and thermal load effects on the buckling of curved nanowires

open access: yesEngineering Science and Technology, an International Journal, 2014
This paper investigates the impact of surface energy and thermal loading on the static stability of nanowires. We model nanowires as curved fixed–fixed Euler-Bernoulli beams and use Gurtin-Murdoch model to represent surface energy.

Stability Analysis of Different Stiffened Plates in Thermal-Mechanical Coupling Environments

open access: yesXibei Gongye Daxue Xuebao, 2020
In view of the structural stability problem of different typical stiffened panels under different loading conditions, ABAQUS software was used to build finite element models of four typical stiffened panels with the same cross section area.

The Ge(001) (2 × 1) reconstruction: asymmetric dimers and multilayer relaxation observed by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction has been used to analyze in detail the atomic structure of the (2 × 1) reconstruction of the Ge(001) surface involving far reaching subsurface relaxations.

Two‐Way Shape Memory Alloy and Polymer Composite Hybrid Smart Actuator With High Speed, Accuracy, and Reversible Deformation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Tailored thermo‐mechanical properties of shape memory polymer composites enable large reversible deformation as well as high actuation speed. Moreover, a structural design with curvature in the transverse direction achieves sub‐second actuation on heating and a larger recovery ratio on cooling. Finally, these newly developed smart two‐way actuators can

Buckling of a ballasted curved track under unloaded conditions

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2021
There is no industry accepted analytical model to compute the critical temperature differential for the buckling of an unloaded curved track in North American literature.
