Passive solar energy : modifications of existing masonry walls to improve thermal performance. [PDF]
Existing brick walls usually have a high U value, one method of improvement is by insulation, but if the wall faces approximately south, it is possible that greater benefits could be obtained by improving the wall's performance as a solar collector ...

Miniature Soft Robot With Magnetically Reprogrammable Surgical Functions
Miniature soft robots have great prospects to revolutionize minimally invasive treatments. Here we present a miniature soft robot, which can be reprogrammed to perform five surgical functionalities with six‐degrees‐of‐freedom motions. This soft robot can prospectively make minimally invasive surgery considerably safer and painless, and enable ...

Simulation of nonlinear convective thixotropic liquid with Cattaneo-Christov heat flux
In this communication we utilized a modified Fourier approach featuring thermal relaxation effect in nonlinear convective flow by a vertical exponentially stretchable surface. Temperature-dependent thermal conductivity describes the heat transfer process.

Elephant‐skin‐inspired crack networks are programmed in porous diatomaceous earth (DE)‐cement composites using substrate‐guided, stress‐concentration induced fracture. The resulting crack lattices act as capillary conduits that redistribute water, while the porous matrix stores moisture.

Intermittent Thermal Convection in Jammed Emulsions
We study the process of thermal convection in jammed emulsions with a yield-stress rheology. We find that heat transfer occurs via an intermittent mechanism, whereby intense short-lived convective "heat bursts" are spaced out by long-lasting conductive periods. This behaviour is the result of a sequence of fluidization-rigidity transitions, rooted in a

A numerical investigation of heat transfer in phase change materials (PCMs) embedded in porous metals [PDF]
The effects of metal foams on heat transfer enhancement in Phase Change Materials (PCMs) are investigated. The numerical investigation is based on the two-equation non-equilibrium heat transfer model, in which the coupled heat conduction and natural ...

The influence of the thermal diffusivity of the lower boundary on eddy motion in convection
The paper presents new concepts and results for the eddy structure of turbulent convection in a horizontal fluid layer of depth h which lies above a solid base with thickness hb. The fluid parameters are the kinematic viscosity ν, the thermal diffusivity
