Measurement of EHL temperature by thin film sensors – Thermal insulation effects

Tribology International, 2020
Abstract The temperature of elastohydrodynamically lubricated (EHL) contacts strongly influences fluid friction. The higher the EHL temperature, the lower is the effective lubricant viscosity and hence shear stress. EHL contacts with Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coatings have shown lower fluid friction than EHL contacts without DLC coatings.

Effect of coatings on thermal conditions of EHL

Lubrication Science, 1995
AbstractThe thermal EHD model of rectangular contact has been applied to analysing the effect of coatings on thermal conditions in EHL. The model takes into account variation of oil viscosity along and across the oil film according to the Barus formula. The solution has been obtained by means of the Newton‐Raphson method.

Speeding up the solution of thermal EHL problems

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 2002
AbstractThis paper considers the fast solution of large, dense linear systems arising from thermal EHL problems. We present an efficient preconditioner for these, based on a novel combination of wavelet compression with the Schur complement. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of this approach. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A Generalized Thermal EHL Model for Point Contact Problems

STLE/ASME 2008 International Joint Tribology Conference, 2008
A generalized thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) model for point contact problems is developed based on an isothermal generalized Newtonian elastohydrodynamic (EHL) model recently developed. The thermal model couples FDM for lubricant energy equation and the DC-FFT method for surface temperature integration.

The Effect of Starvation on a Thermal Mixed EHL Line Contact

Volume 10: 2019 International Power Transmission and Gearing Conference, 2019
Abstract To investigate the effect of the inlet starvation severity on the flash temperature, which dictates the scuffing failure, a thermal mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication model is developed for line contacts operating under the starved lubrication condition.

Thermal EHL Analyses of Point Contacts With Surface Roughness

World Tribology Congress III, Volume 1, 2005
The Newtonian thermal EHL analyses of point contacts with two-sided surface roughness have been performed under pure rolling, sliding/rolling and simple sliding conditions. Thermal results are compared with isothermal ones. It has been found that the sliding motion produces high temperature rise and reduces the film thickness greatly.

An Investigation into Grease Behavior in Thermal EHL Circular Contacts

Tribology Transactions, 2006
The behaviors of two lithium lubricating greases were investigated under EHL circular contact through measurements of traction coefficients on a self-made rig in which the contact was continuously fed with fresh grease. The average values of Erying shear stress and shear modulus of the two lithium greases were obtained from traction experimental data ...

Study on the Micro Thermal EHL Behavior of Wind Turbine Gearbox

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2011
A complete numerical solution for the micro thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) of planetary gearing in wind turbine gearbox is obtained with taking roughness effects and characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids into account. The oil film pressure profile, film shape and the trend of equivalent temperature rise in planetary gearing in special ...
