Apparent thermal inertia of soils in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: Orbital thermal remote sensing reveals modern and ancient hydrological processes in a cold desert landscape

open access: yesArctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research
Most of what is known about sedimentary depositional history, sediment composition, ground ice distribution and depth, and soil moisture content in the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV) of Antarctica results from point measurements of soil properties, which can ...

Spitzer Observations of Spacecraft Target 162173 (1999 JU3)

open access: yes, 2009
Near-Earth asteroid 162173 (1999 JU3) is the primary target of the Hayabusa-2 sample return mission, and a potential target of the Marco Polo sample return mission. Earth-based studies of this object are fundamental to these missions.

Mapping snow density through thermal inertia observations

open access: yesRemote Sensing of Environment, 2023
Snow, as a fundamental reservoir of freshwater, is a crucial natural resource. Specifically, knowledge of snow density spatial and temporal variability could improve modelling of snow water equivalent, which is relevant for managing freshwater resources in context of ongoing climate change. The possibility of estimating snow density from remote sensing

Relativistic magnetic reconnection in collisionless ion-electron plasmas explored with particle-in-cell simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Magnetic reconnection is a leading mechanism for magnetic energy conversion and high-energy non-thermal particle production in a variety of high-energy astrophysical objects, including ones with relativistic ion-electron plasmas (e.g., microquasars or ...

Dammarenediol II enhances etoposide‐induced apoptosis by targeting O‐GlcNAc transferase and Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling in liver cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Etoposide induces DNA damage, activating p53‐dependent apoptosis via caspase‐3/7, which cleaves PARP1. Dammarenediol II enhances this apoptotic pathway by suppressing O‐GlcNAc transferase activity, further decreasing O‐GlcNAcylation. The reduction in O‐GlcNAc levels boosts p53‐driven apoptosis and influences the Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling pathway ...

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

Inertia Market: Mechanism Design and Its Impact on Generation Mix

open access: yesJournal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy, 2023
Increasing penetration of renewable energy generation poses a challenge to power system inertia adequacy. It is vital to provide long-term incentive signals to induce a generation mix with adequate inertia supply.
