Thin KAPTON polyimide films vacuum formed at high temperature retain their shape at temperatures to 450 K [PDF]

open access: yes, 1975
Purpose of investigation was to identify candidate materials for self-evacuating multilayer insulation systems to be used on liquid hydrogen tanks on space shuttle, which would survive re-entry temperatures and mechanical and thermal cycling of one ...

Full‐Spectrum Solar Harvesting and Desalination Enabled by Supra‐Nano Amorphous Ruthenium Dioxide – Mineral Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A mineral‐based supra‐nano amorphous ruthenium dioxide composite (a‐Ru0.5‐AM) was designed, achieving 97% broadband solar absorption. Under one sun, it reaches 87.91 ± 0.32 °C with a distinct thermal buffering effect that favors thermal confinement.

Cryogenic Focused Ion Beam Milling to Investigate the Anisotropic Magnetotransport Properties of Bismuth Microcrystals

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The highly anisotropic Fermi surface of bismuth results in variations in magnetotransport properties across different crystallographic directions, which can be characterized by studying microcrystals. To avoid the observed surface melting under room temperature Focused Ion Beam (FIB) irradiation, two low‐temperature FIB fabrication methods are proposed

Vacuum-jacketed rotary joints for pipelines [PDF]

open access: yes, 1971
Joint absorbs all significant torque, is as rugged as heavy metallic pipe, and has thermal insulation comparable to length of flexible pipe. Design is adaptable to any pipes transporting gases or liquids, including those which are noxious or ...

Growth of Millimeter‐Sized BaTaO2N Single Crystals by an NH3‐Assisted BaCl2 Flux Method

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Millimeter‐sized BaTaO2N single crystals are successfully grown from a BaCl2 flux under NH3 flow. Their comprehensive characterization, including dielectric properties, is demonstrated, and the possible growth mechanisms are discussed. Abstract Perovskite‐type oxynitrides have attracted considerable attention due to their excellent photocatalytic ...

Composite multilayer insulations for thermal protection of aerospace vehicles [PDF]

open access: yes
Composite flexible multilayer insulation systems (MLI), consisting of alternating layers of metal foil and scrim cloth or insulation quilted together using ceramic thread, were evaluated for thermal performance and compared with a silica fibrous ...

Robust Bio‐Textiles Via Mycelium‐Cellulose Interface Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a new class of sustainable textiles by growing mycelium, the root‐like structure of fungi, into cellulose‐based fabrics. This semi‐interpenetrating mycelium‐cellulose fiber network combines the strength and breathability of natural fibers with the water‐resistant and adhesive properties of mycelium, resulting in a robust, scalable,
