Cryogenic Cooling in Wireless Communications

open access: yesEntropy, 2019
Improving the capacity and performance of communication systems is typically achieved by either using more bandwidth or enhancing the effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Thermal noise engines [PDF]

open access: yesChaos, Solitons & Fractals, 2011
Electrical heat engines driven by the Johnson-Nyquist noise of resistors are introduced. They utilize Coulomb's law and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem of statistical physics that is the reverse phenomenon of heat dissipation in a resistor. No steams, gases, liquids, photons, combustion, phase transition, or exhaust/pollution are present here.

Research Facilities for Europe’s Next Generation Gravitational-Wave Detector Einstein Telescope

open access: yesGalaxies, 2022
The Einstein Telescope is Europe’s next generation gravitational-wave detector. To develop all necessary technology, four research facilities have emerged across Europe: The Amaldi Research Center (ARC) in Rome (Italy), ETpathfinder in Maastricht (The ...

Unambiguous Acquisition and Tracking Technique for General BOC Signals [PDF]

open access: yesRadioengineering, 2015
This article presents a new unambiguous acquisition and tracking technique for general Binary Offset Carrier (BOC) ranging signals, which will be used in modern GPS, European Galileo system and Chinese BeiDou system.

Swarmalators with thermal noise

open access: yesPhysical Review Research, 2023
We investigate a population of swarmalators, a mobile version of phase oscillators that both sync in time and swarm through space. We focus on a XY-type model of identical swarmalators running on a one-dimensional ring and subject to thermal noise. We uncover four distinct collective states, some of which capture the behavior of real-world swarmalators

Optimal Determination of the Equilibrium Displacement of a Damped Harmonic Oscillator in the Presence of Thermal Noise

open access: yes, 2004
Using a matched filter technique, we derive the minimum variance, unbiased estimator for the equilibrium displacement of a damped harmonic oscillator in thermal equilibrium when interactions with the thermal bath are the leading source of noise.

Development of mirror coatings for gravitational-wave detectors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Gravitational waves are detected by measuring length changes between mirrors in the arms of kilometrelong Michelson interferometers. Brownian thermal noise arising from thermal vibrations of the mirrors can limit the sensitivity to distance changes ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Noise in NC-AFM measurements with significant tip–sample interaction

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Nanotechnology, 2016
The frequency shift noise in non-contact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) imaging and spectroscopy consists of thermal noise and detection system noise with an additional contribution from amplitude noise if there are significant tip–sample interactions.

Radar multifrequency measurement of elevation angles of low-altitude targets above the sea using the ROOT-MUSIC method [PDF]

open access: yesРадиофизика и электроника, 2020
Subject and Purpose. The article is devoted to the problem of precision radar measurements of target position data when a low-altitude target is above a rough sea.
