Thermal runaway and thermal runaway propagation in batteries: What do we talk about?

Journal of Energy Storage, 2019
Abstract Investigations describing incidents with electrochemical cells, in which the cell heats up and is either destroyed or severely damaged, causing damage to the immediate environment of the cell, are frequently referred to as “thermal runaway“. However, the term is used in most papers without a clear definition of what is meant.

Computational Investigation on Radiation Induced Thermal Runaway Propagation

ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2022
With the global trend of electrification and the fast expansion of electrical vehicle market, re-search and development of Li-ion battery as main energy storage medium has attracted extensive interest. One of the key issues that need to be resolved is thermal runaway and its propagation, where side reactions can occur when the battery is exposed to ...

Transition from Thermal Runaway to Propagating Flames

SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1991
Summary: In analysing thermal runaway in reactive-diffusive systems, it can be seen that diffusion and conduction become significantly reduced in importance towards the final stages. As a result, these diffusive effects play a negligible role in the early structure of the reaction waves that finally emerge from an ignition kernel.
