Thermal subjective sensations of motorcyclists

Accident Analysis & Prevention, 2013
The purpose of motorcycle clothing is to protect the motorcyclist not only against weather conditions but also against an unforeseen contact with other objects. Nevertheless, the use of such clothing, especially in summer, is related to overheating of the motorcyclist's body. Therefore, it would be advisable to ensure that appropriate protection is not

Uniformity of stratum-ventilated thermal environment and thermal sensation

Indoor Air, 2014
Three human test series were conducted to evaluate the uniformity of the thermal environments in a stratum-ventilated chamber with dimensions of 8.8 m (L) × 5.1 m (W) × 2.4 m (H). In all, nineteen conditions were generated by adjusting the room temperature, supply airflow rate, and supply terminal type.

Neurophysiology of Skin Thermal Sensations

Comprehensive Physiology, 2016
ABSTRACTUndoubtedly, adjusting our thermoregulatory behavior represents the most effective mechanism to maintain thermal homeostasis and ensure survival in the diverse thermal environments that we face on this planet. Remarkably, our thermal behavior is entirely dependent on the ability to detect variations in our internal (i.e., body) and external ...

Thermal pleasantness sensation: an indicator of thermal stress

European Journal of Applied Physiology and Occupational Physiology, 1982
The degree of pleasantness or unpleasantness of thermal sensation aroused by a particular peripheral thermal stimulus has been shown to be an indicator of thermal state of the body in relation to the thermoregulatory set point. This phenomenon is known as thermal alliesthesia.

Thermal Sensation Display with Controllable Thermal Conductivity

2019 20th International Conference on Solid-State Sensors, Actuators and Microsystems & Eurosensors XXXIII (TRANSDUCERS & EUROSENSORS XXXIII), 2019
We demonstrate a thermal sensation display that can present various thermal sensation by varying the thermal conductivity of the display. Thermal sensation, i.e., cold/cool/warm/hot, is one of the major tactile sensations and needs to be further investigated to advanced VR/AR systems.

Thermal Sensation Under Unsteady Thermal Environments

Advances in Bioengineering, 2002
As the absolute level of thermal sensation is vague for human beings, one cannot correctly select the absolute level of the multi-point thermal sensation scale with any kinds of precise classification. To achieve a breakthrough in such a situation, we propose a new voting method based on the relative change of thermal sensation, and investigate the ...

Thermal sensation of the body as influenced by the thermal microclimate in a face mask

Ergonomics, 1987
Subjective and physiological responses were obtained from six subjects wearing a face mask while exercising (220 W m −2) for 15 min on a bicycle ergometer. Different combinations of ambient air temperatures (7, 16 and 25°C) and mask air temperatures (22,27 and 33°C) were studied with two different air humidities inside the mask (61 and 86% relative ...

The role of cutaneous mechanoreceptors in thermal sensation and pain

Pain, 1976
The functional behavior of slowly adapting cutaneous mechanoreceptors under combined thermal-mechanical stimulation was investigated by single-unit recordings from the lumbar dorsal roots of the cat. Increased sensitivity to bimodal stimulation was observed in 24 of the 28 units studied, employing stimulus-response functional behavior as the basis for ...

Diversity in thermal sensation

2016
In this paper we structure biological, psychological and background/experience drivers of thermal comfort variance and their relationships to develop a conceptual interaction model. The aim is to create a theoretical model containing a broad range of influencing factors that can be used for hypothesis generation.

The Graphic Scale of Thermal Sensation

Architectural Science Review, 1981
The validity of the assertion that visual aids provide a more useful communication tool between cultures than the spoken word was tested on some 1,500 males from the Solomon Islands. Cartoons were used for a study of thermal perception of Solomon Islanders as they transcend cross-cultural barriers and are a good means of conveying complex and ...
