Laser Metal Deposition of Aluminum Alloys 7075 and 5083 with the Addition of Volatile Alloying Elements through Powder Blending

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser metal deposition of aluminum alloys EN AW‐7075 and EN AW‐5083, using powder blending to compensate zinc and magnesium evaporation. In situ alloying and ex situ alloying with ZnAl12 and AZ91 preserve near‐standard compositions and improve mechanical properties.

FEATS - Finite element thermal stress analysis of plane or axisymmetric solids [PDF]

open access: yes, 1971
FEATS computer code uses finite element analysis to calculate steady state temperature and thermal stress fields for either axisymmetric or plane two-dimensional bodies with boundary conditions, including specified displacements, loads, and thermal ...

Synchronized molecular-dynamics simulation for the thermal lubrication of a polymeric liquid between parallel plates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The Synchronized Molecular-Dynamics simulation which was recently proposed by authors [Phys. Rev. X {\bf 4}, 041011 (2014)] is applied to the analysis of polymer lubrication between parallel plates.

PBF‐LB/M of Ti‐6Al‐4V: High‐Pressure Solution Treatment and Aging for Applications in a Sustainable Aerospace

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing (AM) allows great geometric freedom for lightweight components. As parts are progressively optimized exploiting potentials in AM leading in smaller material cross sections, high pressure solution treating and aging (STA) treatments show an enormous potential for strongly improving material properties.

Identification and analysis of factors affecting thermal shock resistance of ceramic materials in solar receivers [PDF]

open access: yes
An analysis was conducted of the possible modes of thermal stress failure of brittle ceramics for potential use in point-focussing solar receivers. The pertinent materials properties which control thermal stress resistance were identified for conditions ...

A biologically relevant rapid quantification of physical and biological stress profiles on rocky shores. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Different combinations and intensities of physical (e.g. thermal) and biological (e.g.competition or predation) stress operate on organisms in different locations. Variation in these stresses can occur over small to medium spatial scales (cm to 10s m) in

Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.

A Thermodynamic 3D Model for the Simulation of Diffusion‐Controlled Alloying Processes in Heterogeneous Material Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A numerical model resulting from irreversible thermodynamics for describing transport processes is introduced, focusing on thermodynamic activity gradients as the actual driving force for diffusion. Implemented in CUDA C++ and using CalPhaD methods for determining the necessary activity data, the model accurately simulates interdiffusion in aluminum ...
