Liquid-sodium thermoacoustic engine

We have constructed a thermoacoustic engine that uses liquid sodium as its working substance. The engine generates acoustic power using heat flowing from a high-temperature source to a low-temperature sink. The measured performance of this engine disagrees significantly with numerical calculations based on our theory of thermoacoustic engines.

During 1988 to 1994, John Strachen and Harold Aspden demonstrated an all-solid-state thermoelastic cooler which was 0.5 cm thick and a few centimeters in length. With 7.2 V dc applied across the device, it drew 6.3 W of electrical power and produced 13.7 W of cooling power with a 20<th>°C temperature drop.
