Hybrid Control for Thermoacoustic Instabilities

Dynamic Systems and Control: Volume 1, 2000
Abstract The complex interactions between acoustics and unsteady combustion is the driving energy mechanism for transmuting self-excited pressure and velocity oscillations in combustion systems. These oscillations, known as thermoacoustic instabilities, can have adverse effects on system performance.

Identification of a model for thermoacoustic instabilities in a Rijke tube

IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, 2002
In a large class of processes characterized by the presence of a heating source placed in a finite volume, the interaction between the flow field and the heat release mechanism can lead to unsteady fluctuations, known as thermoacoustic instabilities.

Model refinement for the active control of thermoacoustic instability

IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and European Control Conference, 2011
Active control has been shown as a feasible technology for suppressing thermoacoustic instability in continuous combustion systems, and the control strategy design is substantially dependent on the reliability of the flame model. In this paper, refinement of G-equation flame model for the dynamics of lean premixed combustion is investigated. Precisely,

Thermoacoustic Instabilities in an Annular Rijke Tube

Volume 2: Combustion, Fuels and Emissions, Parts A and B, 2010
Thermoacoustic instabilities are a major concern in the design of gas turbine combustors. Most modern combustion chambers have an annular shape with multiple circumferentially arranged burners and, accordingly, suffer often from azimuthal instability modes.

Actively passive control of thermoacoustic instability

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2017
In this work, experimental studies of actively passive control of perforated liner with a bias flow on mitigating thermoacoustic instability are performed. For this, a well-designed Rijke-type thermoacoustic combustor with a perforated liner implemented is designed. A premixed propane-fueled flame is confined in the bottom half.

Impact of Linear Coupling on Thermoacoustic Instabilities

Combustion Science and Technology, 2008
There have been conflicting opinions in literature, about the consequences of ignoring the linear coupling terms in finite-dimensional thermoacoustic models. We try to clarify this issue in this paper. We study consequences of ignoring the linear coupling terms on the non-normal thermoacoustic interactions in a horizontal Rijke tube.

Subcritical thermoacoustic instabilities in a premixed combustor

14th AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference (29th AIAA Aeroacoustics Conference), 2008
Subcritical thermoacoustic instabilities are investigated in a premixed combustor test rig with a swirl-stabilized burner. Triggering of limit cycle oscillations from initially stable states as well as hysteresis in the variation of the preheat temperature and the air and gas mass flows is found. The stable fixed point and the stable limit cycle in the

Thermoacoustic Instability in a Rijke Tube: Non-Normality and Nonlinearity

13th AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference (28th AIAA Aeroacoustics Conference), 2007
The role of non-normality and nonlinearity in thermoacoustic interaction in a Rijke tube is investigated in this paper. The heat release rate of the heating element is modeled by a modified form of King’s law. This fluctuating heat release from the heating element is treated as a compact source in the one-dimensional linear model of the acoustic field.

Identification and active control of thermoacoustic instabilities

Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications (CCA'01) (Cat. No.01CH37204), 2002
This paper presents an implementation of identification and acoustic control of thermoacoustic instabilities on a swirl-stabilized spray combustor. Loudspeakers located upstream of the burner were used as control actuators in the closed-loop system.
