Application of TMAH thermochemolysis to the detection of nucleobases: Application to the MOMA and SAM space experiment

open access: yesTalanta, 2019
Thermochemolysis of seven nucleobases-adenine, thymine, uracil, cytosine, guanine, xanthine, and hypoxanthine-in tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) was studied individually by pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry in the frame of the Mars surface exploration.

Structure elucidation of soil macromolecular lipids by preparative pyrolysis and thermochemolysis

open access: yesOrganic Geochemistry, 2000
The structure of macromolecular lipids from an acid anmoor soil was investigated using preparative pyrolysis and thermochemolysis. The matrix is formed by cross-linked aliphatic chains. Alkanols, triterpenoid alcohols e.g. α-amyrin, sterols, stanols can be bound to the matrix via ether or ester groups.

Structural characterization of bio- and geo-macromolecules by off-line thermochemolysis with tetramethylammonium hydroxide [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Chromatography A, 1998
A new analytical procedure, tetramethylammonium hydroxide thermochemolysis, was used to structurally characterize a variety of bio-and geo-polymers. The technique cleaves esters and some ethers in macromolecular organic matter, yielding low-molecular-mass monomers such as methyl esters of carboxylic acids and methyl ethers of alcohols that are amenable

The search for organic compounds with TMAH thermochemolysis: From Earth analyses to space exploration experiments

open access: yesTrAC - Trends in Analytical Chemistry, 2020
International audienceTetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) is one of the most popular methylation reagents that have been increasingly used for the detection of organic compounds within a wide range of samples, such as soil, coal, lacquer, lignin ...

Methodological Aspects of the Determination of Fatty Acids in Soil by Thermochemolysis

Eurasian Soil Science, 2021
Fatty acids (FAs) are among the most informative parts of nonspecific soil organic matter). Their composition and content reflect the specific features of many soil processes and the structure of the soil microbiome. One of the simplest and fastest methods to analyze FAs is thermochemolysis.

Characterization of the tetramethylammonium hydroxide thermochemolysis products of carbohydrates

Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis, 1999
Abstract The identification of the thermochemolysis products (in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide, TMAH) of carbohydrates is presented. Analysis was carried out using on-line flash pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and off-line flash (vacuum) pyrolysis followed by GC/MS.

Recent applications in analytical thermochemolysis

Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis, 2010
Abstract This review outlines and discusses the recent development of thermochemolysis (or thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation (THM)) since the review paper by Challinor in this journal in 2001. The concept and practice of thermochemolysis using quaternary ammonium base reagents, e.g., tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH), is given.

Thermochemolysis in search for organics in extraterrestrial environments

Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis, 2009
It has been suggested that extraterrestrial organic material may well represent an important part of the organic material available for the origin of life. It may be expected that early life on Mars was similar to prokaryotic life on Earth and whatever preceded the prokaryotes.

Cannizzaro reaction of aldehydes in TMAH thermochemolysis

Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis, 1997
Abstract Recently, tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) has been advantageously used in the analytical pyrolysis of polymers, but yielded a great amount of carboxylic acid methyl esters which were absent in conventional pyrolysis. Our experiments with model compounds such as furaldehyde, benzaldehyde, hydroxy-, methoxy-, dimethoxybenzaldehyde and ...
