A low‐cost clip gauge extensometer for crack mouth opening displacement was developed from accessible procedures and materials. Accuracy and repeatability comparable to commercial devices were demonstrated in calibration and fracture tests, enabling reliable measurement in CT specimens for resource‐constrained laboratories.

ABSTRACT This study explores the use of temperature harmonics to detect intrinsic dissipation during cyclic loading in aluminum alloys. Under sinusoidal loading, the temperature of a solid is modulated by thermomechanical heat sources. The primary source is the thermoelastic effect, which modulates the temperature at the load frequency and twice the ...

Effects of Ion Irradiation on Stage II Fatigue Crack Growth and Plasticity
Abstract Fatigue crack growth characteristics of ion irradiated compact tension (CT) specimens were evaluated in the Paris law region. Fatigue crack growth was monitored under tension‐tension loading and the thermoelastic response was measured. Two stages of crack propagation were identified.

Fatigue limit estimation of metals based on the thermographic methods: A comprehensive review
Abstract Infrared thermography has been under review in the last 30 years due to its versatility and potential in the detection of the thermal signature associated with intrinsic energy phenomena due to dissipative processes, specifically those relying on mechanical fatigue.

A review of using thermoelasticity for structural integrity assessment
The advances in the use of thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) for fracture mechanics assessment are reviewed. The development of techniques to determine stress intensity factor is presented followed by the application of these techniques to fatigue ...

Full-Field Imaging for Evaluating Mode-II Fracture Toughness in CFRP Laminates
To replicate delaminations at the coupon and substructural scales, simulated defects are often introduced into test specimens; therefore, understanding their behaviour within the laminate is essential.
