Advances in Thermokarst Research

Permafrost and Periglacial Processes, 2013
ABSTRACTThe term thermokarst describes the processes and landforms that involve collapse of the land surface as a result of the melting of ground ice. We review the literature that has contributed to our understanding of patterns, processes and feedbacks, and the environmental consequences of thermokarst, focusing on hillslope, thaw lake and wetland ...

Thermokarst Lagoons

2021
Permafrost region subsurface organic carbon (OC) pools are a major component of the terrestrial carbon cycle and vulnerable to a warming climate. Thermokarst lagoons are an important transition stage with complex depositional histories during which permafrost and lacustrine carbon pools are transformed along eroding Arctic coasts.

Alaskan Thermokarst Terrain and Possible Martian Analog

Science, 1975
A first-order analog to martian fretted terrain has been recognized on enhanced, ERTS-1 (Earth Resources Technology Satellite) imagery of Alaskan Arctic thermokarst terrain. The Alaskan analog displays flat-floored valleys and intervalley uplands characteristic of fretted terrain.

Altered microbial structure and function after thermokarst formation

Global Change Biology, 2020
AbstractPermafrost thaw could induce substantial carbon (C) emissions to the atmosphere, and thus trigger a positive feedback to climate warming. As the engine of biogeochemical cycling, soil microorganisms exert a critical role in mediating the direction and strength of permafrost C‐climate feedback.

Outwash Plains and Thermokarst on Mars

Icarus, 1995
Abstract The spatial distribution of different types of rampart craters on Mars suggests a hemispheric asymmetry in the distribution of ground ice. The northern plains, especially major topographic depressions near the terminations of outflow channels, have high percentages of rampart craters.

THERMOKARST IN THE EASTERN VERKHOYANSK MOUNTAINS

Vestnik of North-Eastern Federal University. Series "Earth Sciences", 2019
