Dung beetles do not profit from enhanced spatial heterogeneity in temperate production forests: A forest manipulation experiment

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 2, February 2026.
Our results suggest that dung beetles do not profit from management increasing the structural heterogeneity of production forests. Future warming and openings in forest structure might have negative effects on dung beetles, and consequently on the ecosystem services they provide in production forests.

Environmental Controls on Crenarchaeol Distributions in Hydrothermal Springs

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 2, February 2026.
The optimal pH and temperature for crenarchaeol (a unique archaeal lipid) production in hydrothermal springs are 7.4°C and 46°C, respectively, which has important implications for archaeal evolution. Our study also indicates that pH is the most important environmental variable for archaeal lipid membrane compositions.
