Friction in Oil-Lubricated Rolling–Sliding Contacts with Technical and High-Performance Thermoplastics

open access: yesLubricants
Thermoplastics show great potential due to their lightweight design, low-noise operation, and cost-effective manufacturing. Oil lubrication allows for their usage in high-power-transmission applications, such as gears.

Soft Electromagnetic Actuator and Oscillator

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 10, Issue 6, March 18, 2025.
This work presents a groundbreaking soft electromagnetic system capable of bistable actuation and self‐regulated oscillation. Using liquid metal and silicone as a compliant conductor, the actuator enables force generation, sensing, and feedback with minimal power.

A Sleeve Alters the Pressure‐Stretch Curve of a Hyperelastic Balloon to Enable Pre‐Programmed Sequencing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 10, Issue 6, March 18, 2025.
This article demonstrates that encasing a hyperelastic balloon in an inextensible sleeve greatly increases its burst pressure. This simple mechanical behavior can be used to produce an asymmetric inflation‐deflation sequence for coupled balloons with different thicknesses so they could serve as a soft robot's rear and front anchors when driven from a ...

Printed Interconnects for Heterogeneous Systems Integration on Flexible Substrates

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 10, Issue 6, March 18, 2025.
Key components (sensors, energy devices, communication devices, computing chips, and interconnects) of flexible hybrid electronic (FHE) system connected via conductive printed metal tracks. The figure in the insets shows out‐of‐plane printed interconnects providing opportunities for lithography‐free formation of VIAs, in‐plane access of UTCs pads, and ...

Strain distributions for tensile and shear loading around multiple holes in a thermoplastic composite introduced by thermally assisted piercing

open access: yesAdvanced Manufacturing: Polymer & Composites Science
A multiple thermally assisted piercing process has been developed as a method of making equally spaced holes in thermoplastic composites. The consequences for the mechanical properties of the composite of introducing a limited set of inline holes into ...
