The adaptive function of melanistic colourations across the animal kingdom has been matter of debate for decades and for reptiles the biogeographic Bogert's rule has been frequently advocated: darker where colder to enhance thermoregulation. The broad geographic distribution which encompasses a wide range of climatic conditions render Elapidae an ...

This study examines the influence of climatic and geographical factors on the body size of iguanas in the Lesser Antilles. We show that iguana body size increases with island size and decreases with distance from the mainland, suggesting that geographical conditions have a greater influence on body size compared to climatic conditions.

Physiological and Behavioural Strategies of Bats From Arid Environments
Deserts are characterized by high ambient temperatures, intense solar radiation and low water availability. Desert bats are smaller, have lower energy expenditures, lower water losses, higher wing aspect ratios and lower wing loadings than bats living in mesic environments.

Abstract Colour signals play pivotal roles in different communication systems, and the evolution of these characters has been associated with behavioural ecology, integumentary production processes and perceptual mechanisms of the species involved. Here, we present the first insight into the molecular and histological basis of skin colour polymorphism ...
