Abstract We measured the BASAL breathing frequency following an overnight fast in adult, non‐pregnant/non‐lactating, inactive mammals ranging in body mass from 15 to 5520 kg. The data included results from 338 individual animals from 34 species that were divided into terrestrial, semi‐aquatic (Otariidae and Phocidae) and aquatic mammals.

Abstract Seasonal heat acclimatization is known to enhance autonomic thermoeffector responses, whereas the behavioural response following seasonal heat acclimatization remains unknown. We investigated whether seasonal heat acclimatization would alter autonomic and behavioural thermoregulatory responses.

Abstract Adipose tissue has an established endocrine function through the secretion of adipokines. However, a role for bioactive metabolites and lipids, termed metabokines and lipokines, is emerging in adipose tissue‐mediated autocrine, paracrine and endocrine signalling and inter‐organ communication. Traditionally seen as passive entities, metabolites

Abstract Hyperthermia can cause intestinal injury, facilitating endotoxin translocation and an inflammatory response that has been associated with heat illness. However, the potential occurrence of these responses has been incompletely reported during passive hyperthermia, and the independent effect of hyperthermia is equivocal.
